Dosing Recommendations

Although there are no official dosing guidelines for CBD, we generally recommend the following dosages as a great place to start:

  • Regular dose – 0.25mg/lb. of body weight.
  • Strong dosage – 0.5mg/lb. of body weight.

For a 1000-lb horse, you’ll want to give them about 250mg of CBD for a regular dose and 500mg for a stronger, more potent dose. However, you should probably consult a vet to determine the best dose or if you’re unsure about how CBD will affect your horse. Especially if your horse is taking other supplements or medications, CBD may decrease the effectiveness of these other products.

The best thing is that you don’t need to worry about accidentally giving them too much! It’s almost impossible to overdose on CBD, and it’ll probably just make your horse slightly sleepier than usual. If your horse is new to CBD, it’s probably best to start with a lower CBD dose and then gradually increase the dosage until they reach the desired effects. You can check out our CBD Dosing Chart page for more information!

Additional Dosage Recommendations

Make sure to keep a close eye on your horse when first giving them CBD. Some horses may be more sensitive to higher doses or may need a couple of weeks to adjust. However, most horses tolerate CBD extremely well since there are also very few side effects!

CBD oils typically last about 6-8 hours, so you can give your horse 1-2 servings per day. We recommend giving them CBD with their meals (once in the morning and once at night) so it digests faster and more efficiently!

What is Full Spectrum CBD Oil?

Full spectrum CBD products contain all of the compounds naturally found in hemp plants. This includes a very small amount of THC (up to 0.3%). Despite having THC in full spectrum products, the small amounts are not enough to cause feelings of getting high or intoxication.

Research suggests that when all the compounds are present, they work in synergy to increase each other’s benefits, including CBD. This synergy is called the “entourage effect.” Simply put, when all of the compounds work together, their effects are greater than if they were separate. The presence of THC makes the entourage effect strongest in full spectrum CBD products.

What is Broad Spectrum CBD Oil?

Broad spectrum CBD oil is very similar to full spectrum with one main difference – there is no THC included. Some horse owners may prefer broad spectrum if they want to avoid THC for any reason. Although there is no THC, the entourage effect is still very strong and effective because the other compounds (terpenes and flavonoids) are still present. Pet Hemp Co. sells broad spectrum products because we believe this is the best option for all horses!

Benefits of CBD Oil for Horses

Veterinarians from all over the country are now advocating Hemp CBD oil as a means to promote a natural, holistic way of life for horses. CBD supports the endocannabinoid system (ECS), the system present in all mammals that regulates body functions like sleep, mood, appetite, digestion, and more! Some of the amazing therapeutic benefits include:

  • Relaxing the body
  • Calming the mind
  • Soothing aches and discomfort
  • Improving sleep
  • Aiding appetite and digestion
  • Promoting healthy skin and coat

Do Horses Have an Endocannabinoid System?

Yes, all mammals on Earth have an endocannabinoid system (ECS), including horses! The ECS consists of a complex network of cannabinoid receptors spread throughout the body. Cannabinoids, like CBD, interact with these receptors to give the ECS a boost.

Cannabinoid Receptors

The two main types of cannabinoid receptors are called CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are primarily found in the horse’s central nervous system, while CB2 receptors are primarily found in the horse’s gut and immune system. CBD interacts with the receptors to support the ECS, which is important for animals to reach homeostasis – the state of physiological and internal balance.

Is CBD Oil For Horses Safe?

There are currently no findings to indicate that CBD is harmful to humans or any animals! No cases of overdose or addiction have been reported either, so you can rest easy knowing that the benefits of CBD far outweigh the very minor risks! CBD is well-tolerated by horses of all ages and breeds. There is a wide range of therapeutic purposes with very few side effects.

Although side effects are rare, some potential effects include:

  • Temporary diarrhea
  • Change in appetite
  • Dry mouth or increased thirst
  • Slight drowsiness or fatigue

These side effects are uncommon and generally go away quickly. You should probably allow some time for your horse to adjust to the effects of CBD. Remember that CBD does not have any intoxicating properties so your horse most likely isn’t high!

What To Look For When Buying CBD Oil For Horses

Before you purchase any CBD product, it’s important to do the right research for your own peace of mind. There are plenty of brands everywhere but not all of them can guarantee the same quality and standards that we offer at Pet Hemp Co.! Here are some of the main things you need to consider when deciding between multiple brands:

Certificates of Analysis (COA)

COAs are provided by third-party labs that test for the full cannabinoid profile to determine effectiveness and accuracy. Some brands may mislabel their products and contain less CBD than what is actually provided. Most reputable brands will have COAs readily viewable on their site so that you can verify for yourself!

Price & Potency

Price is one of the most important things that’s probably near the top of your list. It’s important to get both a high-quality product and one that gives the best value for your money. There’s no point in buying the best CBD oil on the market if it costs you an arm and a leg. Remember to compare price points versus how much CBD is actually in the product before you buy.

USA-Grown Hemp vs. Imported Hemp

Make sure you ONLY buy products that source their hemp from farms in the USA. USA-grown hemp is subject to strict regulations and requirements set by the government to ensure quality and safety. Imported hemp from other countries doesn’t follow the same rules, and you may be buying low-quality CBD that could be harmful to your horse’s health. Foreign products might even contain the use of pesticides or chemicals that aren’t safe.

Customer Reviews

Look for customer reviews to really find out how well a brand operates and how effective their products are. A brand may look nice on the outside, but there’s no way to truly tell how they provide consistent quality products until you read firsthand accounts from other customers. You’ll be able to learn about the customer service policies and how good (or bad) they are!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can a Horse Overdose on CBD Oil?

No! There are no known cases of CBD overdose in horses or any other animal for that matter. Should you accidentally give your horse a stronger dosage than normal, don’t worry. The horse can sleep it off and will wake up feeling fine.

Just because there is no risk of overdose does not mean you can get careless when it comes to dosing. Stick to the recommended amount of CBD oil to ensure the best results!

Does CBD Oil for Horses Work the Same as CBD Pellets?

Yes! CBD oil and CBD pellets offer the same wellness benefits to your horse, although there are some minor differences between the two. Both have the same active ingredient – CBD – and both are rich in omega fatty acids and supplemental proteins and fiber.

One product isn’t better than the other as they are both very versatile. You can add CBD oil and pellets to your horse’s feed or add a few drops of the oil into the water. The CBD is digested in the same fashion and takes about the same amount of time to kick in and support the ECS.

What Ingredients Should I Look for When Buying CBD Oil for Horses?

At Pet Hemp Company, we believe less is more when it comes to CBD oil. The best CBD oil contains only two ingredients: pure CBD extract and a carrier oil. While other brands may use carrier oils such as olive or coconut oil, we believe that hemp seed oil is far and away the best choice because it contains a rich mix of vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids.

You’ll want to avoid brands that use synthetic ingredients and additives in their products. Many of these additives may try to adjust the flavor, increase shelf life, or artificially add nutrients, but we believe staying simple is the way to go!

Can I Add CBD Oil For Horses to Its Food?

Absolutely! In fact, adding CBD oil to your horse’s is perhaps the most popular and easiest way to administer CBD oil to your horse because it is so simple. You can also try giving your horse CBD oil by dropping it directly under their tongue for faster results, but it can present a challenge if your horse doesn’t want to cooperate.

Why is CBD Oil a Good Option for My Horse?

CBD oil is a good option because it gives you a chance to boost your horse’s wellness with natural, holistic methods instead of resorting to horse medicines. The potent CBD concentration ensure they’ll feel extra relief and soothing benefits. If you plan on transporting your horse, or they’re suffering from some ailment, or you’re simply trying to promote better sleep, we highly recommend trying CBD no matter the situation!
